Formby High School student to battle it out for table tennis title

A FORMBY student will be battling it out against hundreds of competitors after he made it to the final of a national table tennis competition. Stefan Schober Thomson, who attends Formby High School, will be taking part in the 2015 Butterfly Schools All England Individual Table Tennis Championships National Finals. The 15 year old made it to the final after qualifying as the Merseyside champion, having won his title back in February 2015. The national finals will take place at the Tipton Sports Academy, Birmingham on April 25, and Stefan will have to beat competitors from Bedfordshire, Durham, Hampshire, London and Norfolk to be crowned overall winner. The competition is the largest one day event in the table tennis calendar in England, and is open to all regional winners, from across 46 counties.

Stefan is Merseyside Schools U16 Table Tennis Champ!

Following their success in the North West Table Tennis Tournament, Stefan, Dan and Tim took part in the individual schools Merseyside Tournament on 7 February 2015.

After excelling in their individual groups, Dan was unfortunately knocked out in the quarter finals, Tim however won both his quarter and semifinal to reach the final. Meanwhile, in the other half of the draw, Stefan reached the semifinal, paired against a player from Newton le Willows, to whom he had previously lost. Stefan produced some nice table tennis to go 2-0 up, however then lost the following two games, to ensure that the match went into a nail biting final game, Stefan however prevailed, to set up an “all Formby High School” final.

Both boys played some exciting Table Tennis to make it a great spectacle for the crowd. Stefan won through in the end to become Merseyside U16 Schools Table Tennis champion, receiving his medal from one of the English Table Tennis Association referees. Stefan will now go forward and represent both Formby High School, and Merseyside schools, in the All England School finals later in the year.

Well done to all the boys and we look forward to hearing how Stefan gets on later in the year!
