Baby Turtle found and rescued on Formby Beach and the a second Turtle was also found.....

A husband and wife found a little baby leatherback turtle in trouble during a walk along Formby beach.

Sarah and Gordon Woodward were taking a stroll on their local beach on Sunday, December 21 when they came across the reptile at the waters edge.

Gordon, from Formby said: "The poor thing was exhausted and motionless on the tide line. We picked him, or her, up and took him to the RSPCA in Ainsdale. "Hopefully he will make a full recovery and be released into the sea again when conditions are more favourable."

Leatherback's are the worlds largest turtles and live for over 30 years.

But then a second Turtle was found.....

A rare sea turtle was discovered washed up on a Sefton beach.

The reptile was thousands of miles away from its usual habitat when it came ashore.

The animal is from the Kemp’s Ridley family of critically endangered turtles, native to the Caribbean and west Atlantic.

Rob Archer, who was walking with his girlfriend when he found the animal on Saturday near Taylor’s Bank between Hightown and Formby, said: “At first I thought it was a crab.

“It seemed in a stupor as if there wasn’t much life left in it.

“My first thought was to put it back in the sea so I walked out into some deeper water and it swam away.”

But experts say turtles should not be put back in the sea, instead anyone who finds one should call the RSPCA.

The animal was washed ashore again in the same area yesterday afternoon and was taken to the RSPCA’s Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Cheshire.

Amazingly, another Kemp’s Ridley turtle was found on Walney Island in Cumbria on Sunday night – it is being looked after at the Lake District Coast Aquarium.

Experts believe the turtles are being left in a dazed state by extremely cold temperatures in the western Atlantic, which causes them to drift with the current for thousands of miles.

The Sefton Coast Landscape Partnership Scheme said: “If you should ever find a turtle on the shore – and they are very, very rare – please contact the coast and countryside team on 0151 934 2967 or the RSPCA.”

The news comes just a day after the discovery of a seal in a field in Newton-le-Willows.

The animal is now en route to a specialist wildlife treatment centre in Norfolk amid fears it has a head injury.
