Rail services between Bootle New Strand and Southport are currently disrupted

A man has died after being hit by a train on the Northern Line, which led to Merseyrail services being suspended for over an hour.

Rail services between Bootle New Strand and Southport have been disrupted after emergency services were called to the scene at Ainsdale at around 3.30pm.

The line has now reopened but Merseyrail said delays and cancellations are expected to continue to affect the line until at least 5.30pm.

Merseyrail tweeted following the incident to say that it was doing its best to arrange buses for affected passengers. It has yet to obtain rail replacement services but said Arriva was honouring rail tickets on its buses.

A spokesman for the firm confirmed there had been a "non-suspicious fatality".

A spokesman for British Transport Police (BTP) said: “We can confirm that our officers were called to Ainsdale Rail station in Southport today, Tuesday, 28 October at around 3.30pm following reports of a person being hit by a train.

“Colleagues from Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service also attended. The body of a man, who has yet to be formally identified, was found. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are currently working to confirm the man’s identity and inform his family.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
