Second Beast from the East could be about to hit Formby this weekend

The Met Office warned yesterday about a second ‘Beast from the East’ bringing freezing temperatures to many areas of the UK and the weather warning for snow and ice was extended to the Formby/Merseyside region for this weekend so we are expecting a bitterly cold weekend with strong winds and snow.

People out celebrating St Patrick’s Day tomorrow could find themselves facing treacherous conditions similar to those which hit our Bubble earlier this month.

The yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office states that a band of snow will move slowly south through Saturday morning, followed by snow showers.

The warning remains in place for Sunday.

The Met Office said: “A band of rain will turn more widely to snow early Saturday morning followed by scattered snow showers through the remainder of the day. These showers may become more prolonged, particularly during the evening. Any melting of lying snow will lead to an ice risk on untreated surfaces on Saturday morning and night."

“Travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel is possible.”

The outlook for Sunday is that it could be bitterly cold and windy, with sunshine and snow showers. Snow and winds ease through Monday and Tuesday, though overnight frost and fog is “likely.”

Multiple amber severe weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued for the weekend.

The so-called Mini Beast from the East comes on the back of a bitterly cold plume of air from Scandinavia, bringing with it snow and strong easterly winds.

Amber warnings are in place for between 4pm on Saturday afternoon and 9am on Sunday morning, with up to 15cm of snow expected over the North West England.

On Sunday the amber warnings remain in place until 9am for the North West England.

On Friday, a yellow warning will be in place from 6pm until 11.55pm, when up to 5cm of snow could fall over high ground. Rain will increasingly turn to snow across the North West.

“Following the clearance of an area of rain and snow, ice will form on untreated surfaces Friday evening and persist into Saturday morning,” the chief forecaster said.

“Despite a cold day then on Saturday surface temperatures are expected to rise above freezing during the morning allowing ice to melt.”
