POWER CUT PRIORITY CUSTOMER UPDATE -

Your power cut was caused by a fault on the overhead electricity network. We’ve now isolated faulty part of the network, and your electricity supply should be fully restored. We don’t expect any further disruptions. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Thousands of homes and businesses across Formby were left without electricity after a major unplanned power outage affected the L37 postcode area.

The outage began shortly after 12.40am, with power being lost across the whole of Formby including the village and surrounding residential areas. The exact cause of the fault has not yet been confirmed.

The widespread outage caused significant disruption, with street lighting, homes, shops, pubs and businesses all plunged into darkness. Businesses including McDonald’s and Tesco Formby were affected, while pubs were forced to close for the night.

Residents also reported a loss of mobile phone signal, making it difficult for some people to contact family and friends or report the incident.

Emergency services attended the area after dozens of burglar alarms and house alarms were triggered simultaneously as the power failed.

Electricity network operators initially advised that engineers had been dispatched to investigate the fault after attempts were made to restore supplies remotely. Residents were originally told power was not expected to be restored until 2.41am.

However, crews were able to restore electricity much sooner than anticipated, with supplies returning at approximately 1.38am, more than an hour ahead of schedule.

The electricity network said: “There is a power cut in the L37 postcode area. We attempted to reset the network remotely to restore power in stages, and our emergency response team attended the area to investigate the cause of the fault. We are sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

The cause of the outage has not yet been confirmed.

If you were affected, let us know in the comments which area of Formby you were in and whether your power has now been fully restored. We’ll provide any further updates as soon as more information becomes available.

What was rather concerning during the power outage was that we didn't have any mobile phone or voip services. So calling for help or to check on disabled familty wasn't possible.

Are mobile providers not supposed to have backup power systems for such events?
