A fire broke out in the woodland at National Trust Formby (Victoria Road) on Wednesday night, 30th April, just hours before the site is due to close to the public until spring 2026 — and it was quick-thinking local residents who helped prevent it from spreading.
Emergency services were called to the scene near the caravan park following reports of a fire in the woods. Two fire engines responded, but by the time they arrived, residents from the caravan park had already acted fast, damping down smaller fires and keeping the situation under control until crews could extinguish the larger blaze.
It’s understood the fire was started deliberately, with tyres reportedly being set alight in the wooded area.
Residents have since raised concerns about site security, noting that the firm overseeing the closed-off construction area leaves by 7pm each night, locking the gate behind them. With no one present overnight, many feel the responsibility of safeguarding the area has been left to those living nearby.
One resident commented: “We’ve always said our site is the eyes and ears protecting this area — and this incident proved exactly that.”
We echo the thanks and recognition for the quick actions of these residents. Fires in Formby’s woods remain a persistent problem in warmer months. If you see smoke or suspicious activity, please report it immediately.
We will provide updates as more details become available.
