Remembering Dr Nicolas Barrie Kirkland – A Life Dedicated to Caring for Others

26 December 1934 – 25 October 2026

Formby has lost a much-respected and compassionate doctor whose remarkable career in medicine touched the lives of countless children and families across our community.

Dr Nicolas Barrie Kirkland M.B., M.R.C.P., D.C.H., affectionately known as Nick, sadly passed away on 25 October 2026, aged 91.

A beloved husband to Joan, much-loved father to Justin, Gregory and Nicolas, and proud grandfather to James, Louise, Daniel, Nicolas and Oliver, Nick leaves behind a lifetime of treasured memories and an extraordinary legacy of care and kindness.

Born in Liverpool, Nick attended St Mary’s College in Crosby before studying medicine at the University of Liverpool, qualifying as a doctor in 1958.

He began his medical career working in hospitals in Hammersmith, Liverpool and Manchester before discovering his passion for children’s medicine, joining Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in 1960.

In 1970, he was appointed Consultant Paediatrician at Southport and Ormskirk General Hospital and Christiana Hartley Maternity Hospital.

Nick went on to play a pivotal role in the development of the new Southport and Formby District General Hospital during the late 1980s, continuing to care for patients there until his retirement in 1995.

Throughout his distinguished career, he dedicated himself to the health and wellbeing of children, earning the respect and gratitude of generations of families.

A Life Full of Family, Friendship and Adventure

Away from medicine, Nick embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity.

He loved spending time outdoors and enjoyed golf, cycling, birdwatching, horse racing, astronomy and boats. He also had a deep appreciation for books, art, music and poetry.

A founder member of Formby Hall Golf Club, Nick served for a time as Captain of the Seniors team and was an enthusiastic member of the Rusty Zips team.

His fascination with the night sky led him to become a member of the Liverpool Astronomical Society, and at times he had quite an impressive collection of telescopes.

A loyal Everton supporter, Nick also enjoyed the excitement of racing at Aintree and spending time in the beautiful Lake District.

Above all, Nick was a devoted family man who found his greatest happiness in the company of those he loved.

His passing will be deeply felt by his family, friends, former colleagues, patients and the many people whose lives were made better through his kindness, dedication and compassion.

Funeral Arrangements

A funeral Mass will take place at Our Lady of Compassion, Formby, at 10am on Wednesday 18 November 2026.

A Lasting Legacy

Dr Kirkland devoted much of his life to looking after others, particularly the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community.

His contribution to children’s healthcare and the development of local hospital services will remain an important part of his legacy.

We are sure many Formby families will remember Dr Kirkland, whether as the doctor who cared for their children, a colleague, a fellow golfer, a neighbour or a friend.

❤️ Everyone at Formby Bubble sends their heartfelt condolences to Joan, Justin, Gregory, Nicolas, all five grandchildren and the wider family at this very sad time.

Rest in peace, Dr Kirkland, and thank you for a lifetime of care and dedication.

If you have fond memories of Dr Kirkland, his family would undoubtedly appreciate hearing how he touched the lives of people in our community. Please feel welcome to share your memories and tributes below. ❤️
