The Gild Hall at Formby Parish Centre has officially closed its doors following a business consultation launched earlier this year by the Archdiocese and the Parish Centre Management Committee. The consultation, which reviewed the long-term viability of the club, has now concluded, and trustees have agreed that trading at the Gild Hall would end on Tuesday 12th August.
This decision marks the end of the club’s existence, with manager Eileen and two staff members now facing redundancy.
Following closure, the building will no longer be open to the general public. All fixtures and fittings will be removed as part of the winding-down process, and surveyors will assess the building’s condition to ensure it is clean and ready for its next stage. At this point, it is unclear how long this process will take.
The decision to close comes after years of financial difficulty. Since the pandemic, and particularly over the last couple of years, bar takings have dropped significantly. While visitors were still attending and purchasing tea and coffee, alcohol sales – which had traditionally provided the club’s main income – collapsed, creating a large deficit. This shortfall has been absorbed by the Archdiocese in recent years but has now reached an unsustainable level.
The Parish will eventually take back control of the building, but the future use of the Gild Hall remains uncertain.
We will update readers as soon as more details become available.
