Formby Parish Council seeks residents’ views on solutions to summer beach traffic and parking chaos

Formby Parish Council is asking residents to have their say on potential measures that could help alleviate the serious traffic and parking problems experienced on busy summer beach days.
When thousands of visitors head to Formby during periods of hot weather, surrounding residential roads can quickly become overwhelmed with vehicles. Cars parked on both sides of narrow roads can cause severe congestion, block residents’ driveways and, most seriously, make it difficult for emergency vehicles to get through.
Following discussions at the Parish Council meeting in June, residents are now being asked for their views on three possible measures that could be recommended to Sefton Council Highways:
OPTION 1 – Seasonal parking restrictions
Introduce a Traffic Order from May to September restricting parking on one side of the road along a route from Ward Avenue to Kirklake Road, St Luke’s Church Road, Bushby’s Lane and Queens Road, returning to Ward Avenue.
The aim would be to keep traffic moving and provide a clear route for emergency access.
OPTION 2 – Seasonal one-way system
Introduce a Traffic Order from May to September creating a one-way traffic system along the same route: Ward Avenue to Kirklake Road, St Luke’s Church Road, Bushby’s Lane and Queens Road, returning to Ward Avenue.
This would be designed to help traffic continue moving even when vehicles are parked on both sides of the road.
OPTION 3 – Increased fines for illegal parking
Residents are also being asked whether they would support increased fines for illegal parking as a stronger deterrent against dangerous and inconsiderate parking.
💬 HAVE YOUR OWN IDEA?
The survey also gives residents the opportunity to make their own suggestions about how Formby’s summer traffic and parking problems could be better managed.
What Formby Bubble thinks…
Formby Bubble believes that a combination of Option 1 and Option 2 could offer the most effective solution. Introducing a one-way traffic system while also restricting parking to one side of the road would help keep traffic flowing more freely, reduce dangerous congestion and, most importantly,
ensure that a clear route remains available for emergency vehicles.

We have all seen just how quickly these roads can become gridlocked on busy summer beach days, and we believe that tackling both traffic flow and roadside parking together could make a real and meaningful difference for residents, visitors and the emergency services.
This is your opportunity to have a say before any recommendations are put forward to Sefton Council Highways.
Whether you support one, several or none of the proposals, Formby Parish Council wants to hear from local residents about what measures they would find acceptable.

Allow parking on only one side of the road but make it Pay and.Display all year round but give residents exemption stickers for their vehicles or for them to lend to visitors vehicles. When visitors to our area come to enjoy our beautiful countryside and beach ,there is nothing for them to spend money on not like Southport . Nothing is free these days so why should those who travel far and wide not have to pay to park as well and for the parking fees to be used here in Formby and not sent down the line to Bootle. Also as suggested introduce a one way system
