Formby Bypass Work and Southport Old Road Closure from due to £6M electricity works in the region

SP Energy Networks is undertaking a significant £6 million reinforcement project to enhance the reliability and resilience of the electricity network in the region as demand increases and people make greener choices. This work will include installing a new cable connection between substations in Southport and Formby, helping to ensure reliable electricity supplies for Merseyside far into the future.
The project, which is set to complete by summer 2025, will be carried out in stages. Currently, SP Energy Networks is installing cables along the Formby Bypass, a process that involves digging a trench, installing cable ducts, and then refilling and moving forward in 25- to 40-meter sections to minimize disruption.
Details on the Southport Old Road Closure
Starting in early November, work will progress to install ducts near the roundabout at the southern end of Southport Old Road. This will require weekend-only closures of Southport Old Road to through-traffic on the following dates:
- November 2 and 3
- November 9
- November 16 and 17
During these dates, Southport Old Road will remain open to local access, but vehicles will not be able to enter from the Formby Bypass. Access to properties along Southport Old Road can be gained via Liverpool Road, and SP Energy Networks may request that vehicles near work areas be temporarily relocated to ensure access for equipment.
Additional Information:
- Working Hours: Standard hours will be from 07:00 to 17:00, five to seven days a week, allowing for efficient and safe project completion.
- Traffic Management: All traffic plans have been approved by Sefton County Council, with clear signage in place to guide road users.
- Power Supply: There are no expected interruptions to electricity supply as a result of this work.
SP Energy Networks and their teams appreciate the community’s understanding and patience as they work to future-proof the local energy network.
