Dog owners in Formby can breathe a sigh of relief as seasonal beach restrictions come into force across parts of Sefton this weekend, with Formby beach remaining open to dogs throughout the summer.
From Friday 1 May until 30 September, designated exclusion zones will be in place at Southport and Ainsdale, but Formby continues to welcome responsible dog walkers all year round.

What it means for Formby residents
While restrictions are enforced in busier tourist areas further north, Formby remains one of the few locations along the Sefton coast where dogs are still permitted during the peak summer months.

This makes it a popular destination for dog owners looking to enjoy coastal walks, particularly with its wide open sands, pinewoods, and access to the dunes.
Why other beaches have restrictions
The seasonal bans in Southport and Ainsdale are introduced each year to manage large crowds and to protect the coastline, much of which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
These protected areas stretch along the Sefton coast from Crossens to Waterloo and are home to rare plant species, nesting birds, and delicate sand dune systems that can be easily disturbed during the summer season.
Rules still apply in Formby
Although Formby beach remains dog friendly, important rules are still in place across the borough:
• Dogs must be kept under control at all times
• A maximum of six dogs can be walked by one person
• Dogs are banned from enclosed children’s play areas and fenced sports facilities
• In certain areas such as picnic spots and public spaces, dogs may need to be kept on a lead
• Owners must clean up after their pets and dispose of waste responsibly
Authorised officers can also instruct owners to put their dogs on a lead if they are causing a nuisance or disturbance.
Dog owners are also being reminded to avoid allowing pets into sensitive areas such as dune slacks and coastal pools, where wildlife can easily be disrupted.
A popular summer spot for dog walkers
With restrictions now in place elsewhere, Formby is expected to see an increase in visitors bringing their dogs to the area.
Residents and visitors alike are being encouraged to enjoy the beach responsibly, helping to protect the environment while keeping it a safe and welcoming space for everyone.
Formby remains one of Sefton’s most accessible and dog friendly coastal locations, offering a balance between public enjoyment and environmental care during the busy summer months.
