- 2 min read

At 7:30am this morning, the temperature in Formby is already 21°C, and it is expected to climb to around 31°C later today, making this one of the hottest days of the year.
This is not just about feeling uncomfortable – extreme heat can be dangerous and even life-threatening. Many people are unaware that more people in England die during periods of severe hot weather than from any other type of severe weather warning, including storms and flooding.
Please take this heat seriously and help protect yourself and those around you.
💧 Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
🏠 Keep your home cool by closing curtains and blinds on windows facing the sun.
🌳 Stay out of direct sunlight where possible and avoid strenuous exercise between 11am and 3pm, when UV levels and temperatures are at their highest.
🧴 If you do need to go out, wear sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, lightweight clothing and carry water with you at all times.
🚗 Travelling today? The heat may affect roads and public transport, so check before you travel. If using buses or trains:
• Carry plenty of water.
• Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing.
• Consider taking a small battery-powered fan.
• If you begin to feel unwell, get off at the next stop and seek fresh air.
• Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable passengers who may be struggling.
❤️ Please check on elderly neighbours, relatives, vulnerable people, young children and anyone living alone. They are at much greater risk during extreme heat and may need help staying cool and hydrated. If you are concerned about someone’s health, contact NHS 111.
🌊 If you’re heading to Formby Beach, enjoy the sunshine safely:
• Enter the sea gradually to reduce the risk of cold-water shock.
• Swim only where lifeguards are on duty.
• If you or someone else gets into difficulty in the water, Float to Live by lying on your back until you can recover or help arrives.
🔦 Hot weather can also put pressure on the electricity network, so it is sensible to have torches, spare batteries and a fully charged power bank available in case of a power cut.
⚠️ Please don’t underestimate today’s heat. It may be a beautiful summer’s day, but temperatures of around 31°C can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Stay safe, look after one another, and enjoy the sunshine responsibly. ☀️
