A welcome return To FJSC after enforced 6 week break due to bad weather - Franks report

It was a welcome return to football for all Formby Junior Sports Club’s members last weekend after an enforced six week break due to the bad weather.  There were excellent cup wins for the Sunday FJSC Under 13 team and for FJSC Under 9 Reds, plus a thrilling encounter between FJSC Under 8 Whites and FJSC Under 8 Blacks. Inter Club football was very well attended and it was pleasing to see a number of boys coming along for the first time.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM MATCHES

FJSC Under 9 Reds played away against Southport FC in the Craven Minor League Shield. It is always a very competitive affair when these two teams meet and this match was no different with both sides having good spells throughout the match. The hosts started strongly and took the lead in the first half to go one goal up but the Reds fought back to win the game by five goals to three. This was helped with a goal from Campbell Woodcock, his first competitive goal and a strike fromJoel Wright plus a fine hat-trick from sharp shooter Tom Murphy . In an overall very good team performance other highlights included a good goalkeeping display from James Hannan, another strong display at wing back for Mason Todd with Oliver Crouch, Isaac Pepper, Joel Craven and Zac McHugh putting in tireless efforts and good performances to ensure the Reds started the New Year with a win.  The Parents’ man of the match was awarded to Tom Murphy.   FJSC Reds will now play Southport and Ainsdale Amateurs in the semi-final.  See photograph of the team above.

FJSC Under 13’s Sunday team won 5 nil in their Thomas Galvin semi-final match against Southport Athletic Blacks.   Archie Ogden scored a very good hat trick.  Also on the scoresheet with one goal each were Dominic Maxwell and James Cook.  The Under 13’s will play Greenloons Green in the cup final later in the season.

FJSC Saturday team lost 4-1 to a very good Silcox Villa team in the Hightown League.  Dominic Maxwell scored.

FJSC Under 12 Blacks were in semi-final cup action league leaders Southport Athletic.  Southport opened the scoring early on when they broke down the right wing and scored with a well taken goal. FJSC quickly regrouped and where then the stronger team in the first half as they played some excellent football. Patrick Fleming came close to equalising, first from a free kick that was well saved, and then with a shot that went just wide following a flowing move that started with awell-timed tackle from Evan Hughes. The deserved equaliser came from Abe Rice as he found space on the left and slotted the ball home to make it 1-1 at half time.

The second half continued in the same vein with few clear chances falling to either team and both defences looking solid. FJSC looked to play passing football at every opportunity but as the half wore on FJSC’s recent lack of match time started to show as they began to tire, and Southport opened up their defence scoring three late goals. With the last kick of the game Abe Rice saw his shot cleared off the line having beaten the goalkeeper, which had that gone in would have given a fairer reflection of the match. Man of the match was awarded to Aaron Pickard for a strong defensive performance.

FJSC Under 10 Whites were at home against Burscough Dynamo. FJSC started brightly and some excellent goalkeeping from Burscough’s number 1 kept the scores level. Burscough looked bright in attack and some excellent defending from Noah Lace, Nate Daniels and Reece Bagley was needed. Matthew Crutchley was very confident in goal as ever. The deadlock was finally broken when Archie Weir found the back of the net just before half time. Archie Weir then extended the lead to 2nil shortly after the break. Burscough came close to scoring on a number of occasions and finally pulled a goal back with a few minutes remaining. Formby were saved from a nervous finish with a wonderfully taken goal by Isaac Jones and the game was secured further with a simple finish for Zac Hooson-Jones after an excellent free kick from Nate Daniels. The whole team was excellent but man of the match was Gregory Houghton who was full of energy in midfield.

FJSC Under 9 Blacks had a great cup match at home against Town Green.   Joseph Kenyon gave FJSC the lead after clever approach passing from Finn McDerby and Huey Stevenson.  Town Green drew level just before half time.   Chances came and went after the break for FJSC but it was Town Green who put their chances away to win 3-1.  It was a very good effort from the whole FJSC team.

FJSC Under 8 Whites played FJSC Under 8 Blacks.  It was a fantastic match.  The Whites started well but the Blacks showed great determination with goalkeeper Finley Cregeen making a string of wonderful saves.   Jack Haggart eventually scored for the Whites after dribbling through the Blacks defence. A sublime hat trick from Seb Hodgson extended the Whites lead.  The Blacks continued to play well and a goal each from Isaac Daniels and Ethan Catleugh kept the scoreline close. Man of the match Finley Cregeen kept the Blacks in with a chance with more great saves.  A late Oliver Stinson goal for the Blacks reduced the deficit to one.  In an exciting finish the Whites held firm to maintain their undefeated run.
