Formby Junior Sports Club - Franks report
Formby Junior Sports Club Under 6’s rounded off the year in great style by winning the Rhys Jones Christmas Cup competition in Croxteth last Saturday.
It was a fantastic achievement as the boys were taking part in their first ever competition.
On the 28th December the Under 6s put down there brand new presents, left the pigs in blankets for a few hours and made there way to Croxteth to compete in the Christmas Cup.
This was a tournament consisting of eight brilliant teams from all around Liverpool. FJSC played three group games. Goals from Mason Stringer and some good defensive performances from Max McAuley and Joshua Halpin were the platform for the team to finish with sufficient points in the group to move into the semi finals.
FJSC’s semi-final opponents Beechwood proved to be a very strong team. Rory Rankine finished coolly to give FJSC the lead before Mason Stringer doubled the advantage. Despite a late scare the team held on to win, and to play the final against hosts, ESC.
The final was one-way traffic for FJSC for most of the game. Jude Massey scored early on and it would have been many more, had it not been for ESC’s excellent goalkeeper. Josh Tallon, Rory Rankine and Jude Massey were brilliant in midfield, whilst Mason Stringer caused the ESC defenders problems throughout the game. ESC came back strongly and FJSC goalkeeper Max McAuley and Joshua Halpin both had to make goal line saves and clearances near the end of the match to ensure that the team won 1 nil. When the final whistle was blown there were wild celebrations from the FJSC players and supporters alike. The semi-final and cup final team displays from the team were the best performances of the day and to win the cup was a reward for all the hard work by the boys at Saturday Inter Club, coaching sessions and the many Sunday friendly matches over the last six months.
