Superdrug in Formby Village is closing down in February
Superdrug in Formby Village is closing down in February. This is devastating news for our Bubble as we have lost so many shops in the last few years including New Look in June this year and Dorothy Perkins in June 2016. We were originally told that all the staff have been given jobs elsewhere within the company but we have now been informed that In fact only two of the five staff have been given jobs elsewhere. Also another member of staff is being made redundant. We are very sorry to hear this! In 1964, Ronald and Peter Goldstein, who had both spent several years in the grocery retailing industry, decided to implement their trading formulae and concepts and start a toiletry retailing business. Superdrug was incorporated in 1964 as 'Leading Supermarkets Limited' and adopted its present name later that year. In 1966, the first Superdrug store opened on 26 April in Putney High Street. By 1989, Superdrug had 681 outlets. Now, in 2018, Superdrug are now the United Kingdom's second-largest beauty and health retailer currently operating approx 800 stores in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and currently have approx 200 in-store pharmacies. The Superdrug empire turns over £1.2 billion a year (2017 figures). Such a shame that we are losing this wonderful shop from our Bubble. The store is now up for rent on a new 15 year lease from February 2019.
