Merseyside Fire & Rescue offer safety advice about Halloween costumes

  • Oct 31, 2017
  • 2 min read

If you are thinking of buying a fancy dress costume for your little one this Hallowe'en please bear the following in mind:

* Children's Hallowe'en costumes are classed as toys and may catch fire if they come in to contact with a naked flame, even for a few seconds.

* These types of garments often have lower fire safety requirements then normal clothing.

* Only buy costumes from reputable retailers and ensure the garment is made from flame-resistant materials and has a visible CE marking (EN71-2).

* Heavier, thick materials are considered to be safer than thin, frilly or layered ones.

* Use LED candles and lights instead of lit candles.

* Keep costumes away from naked flames.

* Should a garment catch fire remember to STOP,DROP and ROLL.

Have a happy Hallowe'en this year, but make sure it's a safe one.
