Formby Squirrels Rotary raise over £500 for Southport Lifeboat

The Formby Squirrels Rotary Club held their annual Wine Tasting at the Formby Luncheon Club on Friday 30th June in aid of the Southport Lifeboat. Waitrose provided the assistance in the form of Ian Andrews with the wine, glasses, a very enjoyable quiz and prizes for the winning table. Six wines were tasted (white, rose, red and sparkling) and a delicious cheese platter with bread and crackers was provided after the second course of wine.

Dave Bosworth the outgoing President of the club welcomed the 52 attendees to the evening who were very generous in their participation in the raffle. Prizes for the raffle were kindly donated by Don Luigi’s, the Co-op undertakers, Serenity spa, Venue hairdressers Sports Direct and many other local businesses. Ros Gelder presented the prizes to the lucky winners.

Everybody had a very enjoyable evening and at the end of the wine tasting a fun game of bingo was played to provide an end to the evening.

It must be admitted that the public address system came into its own as the noise level rose with the consumption of the wine and the level convivial conversation. The club raised approximately £523 for the Southport Lifeboat which will be added to other funds raised from a bag pack at Iceland and other fund raising activities.

Over the last year the club has also supported Formby Carers who support the carers of the chronically ill, Liverpool Teenage Cancer Trust to refit a respite room for the teenage patients undergoing treatment and the respite pods at the Altcar Army Camp.

The club differs from many Rotary clubs in that it is flexible in how it operates, happy to embrace innovation and is truly mixed in its membership. The club meets twice a month and does not routinely have meals as an integral part of the meeting. It has its business meeting on the second Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in the Grapes at Formby and has a further social meeting on the fourth Thursday of the month which can be bowling, a meal or just a drink at the public house.
