There was a party atmosphere on Saturday (5 March) in The Good Wool Shop at Derbyshire’s, on Chapel Lane in Formby.
Staff and customers celebrated the shop’s first birthday with cake, a yarn quiz, cards and presents. Many people also brought along items they’d made over the last year with purchases from the shop, as there are plans for a photo gallery of customer’s craft work.
Shop owner Isabel Jordan explains: “As a newcomer to Formby, opening The Good Wool Shop has catapulted me into the heart of the local craft community. I’m really thrilled by how people have welcomed what the shop has to offer, and that we have been able to give back something special in return.
“It’s about much more than just selling wool or even teaching people new skills. We’ve seen new friendships formed and old ones rekindled in our knitting and crochet groups and classes. I’ve been touched to witness chance reunions in the shop between people who’d long ago lost touch – including myself with old friends from Switzerland! We’ve also been able to offer a bit of a lifeline with friendly advice and therapeutic activity for some of our customers battling isolation or illness.
“We’ve been delighted to be able to support local charities, including the National Trust and Shyira Trust, and to support local initiatives such as the campaign to raise awareness of how the Formby community can help people suffering from dementia. Our “twiddlemuff” kits have been very popular and have been a great talking point in the shop.
“As a business we are keen to promote the British wool industry and now stock UK alpaca and sheep wools from four different companies. We’re also listening to our customers, and to meet those demands have just taken delivery of a full range of embroidery threads.”
