Formby Football Club will live on forever with a big Squirrel fan

Peter Gallagher lives in Hertfordshire and used to follow all the squirrel games on Twitter, predicting the scores and earning the nickname of the Mystic Squirrel.

Peter says he was lucky enough to see the team play in their last cup final and it was then that he promised he would commemorate the victory with a tattoo.

The Formby Football club, known as the Squirrels, were established in 1919 as Formby United. After a year at various pitches in the town they moved to a ground that would be their home for more than 80 years on Brows Lane. Three years later they dropped the 'United' to become simply Formby FC - The Squirrels.

In the close season of summer 2011 the club had an almost complete change of personnel. They got a new chairman/owner, Hugh McAuley, new management of Jim Shirley and assistant Kevin Dally, an entirely new squad of players, and many new backroom staff. Additionally, the club reverted to its traditional colours of gold and royal blue, and the red squirrel badge was reinstated as the club's emblem.

Despite having had two of the best seasons in the club's history, without a ground or junior teams the organisation was in a precarious state. When manager Jim Shirley resigned for family reasons in the close season it left the club without a basis to continue. They announced their disbanding on 2 June 2014.

Even though the club no longer exists there are many fans that still keep in touch and hope that one day they will return.

Peter lived in Formby from 1967 to 1989 and then moved down south for work. He still visits family and friends whenever he can.

Peter said " the tattoo is a bit sore but was worth it! The last Formby team were brilliant and the fans such as Merrick, Adrian and Sheila were awesome supporters!"

Formby Football Club on Twitter gave us a quote about Peter and his tattoo....

"Having got to know Peter through our match commentaries on Twitter, it was obvious he loved the club as much as anyone. We think his tattoo is fantastic and a fitting tribute to the squad of the last two seasons, the most successful in our history. Our late manager Jim Shirley would love it."
