Formby schoolboy wows judges with short story

Jack James, 9, will see his story published in hardcopy and as an e-book

A young wordsmith from Formby is feeling “out of this world” after coming third in the KalliKids Short Story Competition.

Jack James, who goes to Trinity St Peter’s School, in Paradise Lane, entered his story, 'The Quest of Shine', in March.

After being shortlisted in July, he was this week told he had come third in the Year 3 category. Jack, 9, said: “I am just amazed. I knew I had been shortlisted which I was really proud about, but now that I am in the top three….I feel out of this world.

“When I found out the news I was speechless. It has inspired me to write more and now I’m going to find my next story.

Jack’s story was among more than 500 entries nationwide. After being shortlisted the entries were judged by bestselling author, Joanna Rees.

“I thought with so many people entering I didn’t stand a chance,” said Jack. “Now I am getting my story published, it is unbelievable. I will definitely have that book in a special place on my bookshelf.”

For the contest, youngsters had to pen a 500 word story around the theme of Shine. There were four age categories to enter – year 3, 4, 5 and 6. As a runner up, Jack will see his story published in a hardcopy and e-book.

His teacher, Alex Snell, said: “We are all delighted with the superb news and Jack’s hard work and effort. The KalliKids Short Story Competition has been a fantastic platform to inspire Jack’s creativity, writing for a real audience. Jack is extremely proud of his achievement and we are certain that this incredible experience will inspire and motivate him for many future stories.”

Karen Bach, Spokeswoman for the KalliKids Short Story Competition, added: “At KalliKids, we are devoted to nurturing and inspiring young people. We want them to get involved and try new things. The short story competition was a perfect way to enhance this.”
