The man was released pending further enquiries after being interviewed under caution.

A 34-year-old man was interviewed under caution after a video emerged online of an elderly man being knocked to the floor near Aintree racecourse.

After he handed himself in to a police station last night the Formby man was quizzed by police before being released pending further enquiries.

The original video shows the bearded man laughing at the camera before knocking into the older man causing him to fall to the floor.

The person holding the camera can be heard laughing throughout the incident which happened at around 7pm on Thursday, in Ormskirk Road.

Police said last night that they were treating it as an assault and asked witnesses to contact them by dialling 101.

The man who was knocked over is a 63-year-old from Skelmersdale in West Lancashire.

He suffered bruising to his face during the incident and was treated by ambulance staff before being taken to hospital to be checked over. Police plan to speak to him later today and say enquiries are ongoing into the incident.

A longer video posted on his facebook page last night by the person who says he filmed the footage shows the drunk man staggering down the road before knocking into the older man who loses his balance and falls over.

He adds: "When you see the video you will see this is a total accidental collision, it's important people get this truth because a lot of people are very upset and I can see why because it looks like a malicious, cowardly attack but this is far from the reality of the situation."

A fundraising page has now been set up for elderly man knocked to the floor.

A fundraising page has been set up to help an elderly man knocked to the floor near Aintree racecourse in a video which went viral online.

“The Gentleman at Aintree” page on the Go Fund Me website was launched by Joanne Dickinson on Saturday night and has so far raised £145.

She said she did not know the man but hoped to raise enough to help replace his teeth which a witness said were knocked out when he was barged to the ground.

She wrote: “Most of us tonight have watched the horrible video on Twitter or Facebook of the Gentleman being knocked to the ground.

“He apparently according to the man who put him in recovery position has broken his teeth and his phone, I’m hoping we can raise enough to maybe help him replace his teeth and his phone.

“I dont know the gentleman , I would just like him to know that most decent people are disgusted that even if the knock was an “ accident “ no remorse was shown.”

Chris Barber, who donated £10 to the page, wrote: “Poor old guy, someone’s dad/husband. Hope he gets sorted.”

Clare Haupt said: “Poor guy let’s hope this make life a bit better”, while Eddie Morris wrote: “theres more good people than bad!”
