The Hidden Gem on Duke Street: Discover Formby’s Wonderful Support Centre That So Many People Don’t Know About

Did you know about this wonderful little Support Centre in the heart of our Bubble?
From cancer support to community wellbeing, Sefton Support Group on Duke Street is helping local people through some of life’s most difficult challenges.
Tucked away on Duke Street in Formby is a community support centre that many local residents may not even realise exists.
Sefton Support Group (SSG), based at 1 Duke Street, provides a welcoming place where people can find friendship, understanding, practical advice and emotional support when they need it most.
What makes this organisation particularly special is that its services have grown over the years to support a much wider section of the community.
From Cancer Support to Helping the Wider Community
The organisation originally began as Sefton Cancer Support Group, providing a safe and understanding environment for people affected by cancer.
Through the dedication of volunteers and the support of the local community, it became a place where people could share their experiences, find comfort and receive help during incredibly difficult times.
However, the team recognised that many other people were also facing challenges with their physical health, mental wellbeing and everyday lives.
As a result, the organisation evolved into Sefton Support Group, expanding its services to help individuals and families affected by serious illness and other difficulties.
Today, the centre offers a range of activities, support services, educational workshops and opportunities for people to connect with others.
More Than Just a Support Centre
For someone experiencing loneliness, struggling with their health or simply needing somebody to talk to, walking through the doors of a community centre can make a real difference.
Sefton Support Group aims to provide exactly that kind of welcoming environment.
Alongside its wellbeing activities, the organisation offers counselling services, information about specialist support and opportunities for people to become involved in their local community.
The centre also provides a space where people can meet others, take part in activities and feel part of something positive.
Free Community Drop In Sessions Every Thursday
One particularly valuable service is the centre’s Thursday Community Drop In programme.
These sessions bring together local organisations and services, giving residents the opportunity to receive information, ask questions and access practical support without having to travel far from home.
Organisations involved include:
Merseyside Police Community Team: Residents can speak directly with local officers, raise concerns and ask questions about issues affecting their neighbourhood.
Sefton at Work: Providing advice about employment, training and opportunities available locally.
Sefton Carers Centre: Offering information and support for people who care for family members, friends or loved ones.
Venus: A local organisation providing additional support and advice to people who may need assistance.
Sefton Carers Centre and Venus attend on alternate months.
The Thursday Community Drop In sessions are completely free to attend.
Activities, Friendship and Wellbeing
Throughout the week, Sefton Support Group also runs regular activities and support sessions.
The organisation focuses on improving physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, recognising that having somewhere to go and people to talk to can be just as important as accessing practical assistance.
The centre publishes a timetable of its activities, although individual sessions may occasionally change.
Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to contact the team beforehand to check what is taking place.
