Today, Wednesday 21st January, marks Red Squirrel Appreciation Day, and here in Formby we have a very special reason to celebrate.
Formby is one of the few places in the UK where red squirrels still call the landscape home. Our pinewoods and dunes have long been a safe haven for these beautiful, elusive animals, a privilege that makes Formby truly unique.
While many residents will remember seeing red squirrels much more frequently in years gone by, sightings today are rarer, which makes every glimpse feel even more magical. Habitat pressures, disease, and competition from grey squirrels have all taken their toll, reminding us just how precious and fragile our local red squirrel population is.
Even if you haven’t spotted one recently, knowing they are still out there darting through the trees, leaping between branches, and quietly surviving thanks to ongoing conservation efforts is something worth celebrating and protecting.
💚 Have you spotted a red squirrel in Formby?
We’d love to see your photos. Whether taken recently or from your camera roll over the years, send them in and we’ll happily share them with the wider Formby Bubble community to mark this special day.

Let’s take a moment today to appreciate how lucky we are to live in a place where red squirrels are still part of our natural heritage and why it’s so important we continue to look after the environment they depend on.

Send us your red squirrel photos and sightings to info@formbybubble.com

Proud to be Formby
