New mounting block installed for horse riders at National Trust Formby

There is good news for horse riders visiting Formby, with a new mounting block now installed at the Lifeboat Road car park to make visits easier and more accessible.

The National Trust has confirmed that the new mounting block has been installed in Bay 3 at Lifeboat Road, where horse box parking is available.

The new facility has been provided thanks to funding from the British Horse Society Ride Out Fund.

Horses are welcome to use the designated bridle path at Formby throughout the year, with riders also able to enjoy riding along the beach between Ainsdale and the boundary of Altcar Rifle Range.

The National Trust has issued some useful advice for anyone planning to visit Formby with their horse.

Horse box parking is available in Bay 3 at Lifeboat Road, L37 2EB. Parking is limited, so riders are advised to arrive early and, where possible, avoid busy sunny weekends, bank holidays and school holidays.

Riders should download the bridle route map before travelling or check the route maps displayed in the car park. Horses should remain on the waymarked bridle path to help protect Formby’s wildlife and sensitive habitats.

The Lifeboat Road boardwalk is not suitable for horses, so riders wanting to reach the beach should use the designated bridle path.

Those riding south along the beach should also be aware of the nearby Altcar Rifle Range. Red flags displayed on the dunes mark the boundary of the live firing range and must be observed.

Riders are also being reminded to check tide times before setting off. To protect birds resting and feeding along the shoreline, horse riding on the beach is not permitted within two hours either side of high tide.

Visitors are asked to leave only hoof prints behind and to take all litter and horse manure home with them.

The National Trust has a dedicated horse riding information page for Formby, including further details about routes and visiting with horses.
