The latest Department for Education data has revealed the top-performing secondary schools for GCSE results in Sefton for the 2024/25 academic year — and St Mary’s College in Crosby has taken the top spot across the borough, while Formby High School proudly leads the way in Formby.
The newly published figures show that St Mary’s College achieved the highest overall GCSE performance score in Sefton, with 63.1%, followed by Formby High School with 54.2%, and Birkdale High School with 51.9%.
Here’s how the top Sefton schools ranked:
St Mary’s College, Crosby – 63.1
Formby High School – 54.2
Birkdale High School – 51.9
Greenbank High School – 50.6
Chesterfield High School – 48.3
Holy Family Catholic High School – 44.6
Meols Cop High School – 44.5
Maricourt Catholic High School – 44.5
While St Mary’s leads across Sefton, Formby High School remains the top-performing secondary school in Formby, continuing its strong record of academic excellence and success.
This year’s GCSE performance tables come just two weeks before parents must submit their secondary school applications for September 2026, making the results particularly timely.
Unlike previous years, this year’s data does not include the pupil progress (‘added value’) score, as pupils in the Class of 2025 did not sit national primary assessments in 2020 due to Covid-19 lockdowns. Despite this omission, the results still give valuable insight into overall school performance.
St Mary’s College, Formby High School and Birkdale High have been praised for their consistent standards and commitment to delivering high-quality education, helping students achieve excellent results year after year.

I recently tried TiviGen IPTV while looking for a reliable IPTV service and was genuinely surprised by the quality. You can check them out at tivigen.com, and the IPTV subscription setup was quick and easy. Streaming has been smooth with HD IPTV, sports IPTV, and IPTV Arabic channels, and it works well on IPTV for Smart TV and Android devices.
Well done to Formby High! Great to see a local school doing so well. Actual reality is that DfE data does not include all GCSEs, hence the previous post pointing out that Merchant Taylors' is actually the #1. Our neighbour has children who go there and their Eng&Maths 5+ is 86% (versus St Mary's 76% and Formby 66%)
Grades 7- 9: Formby High 30%, St Mary's 39%, Merchant Taylors' 45% (2025)
Formby High School is in fact in 2nd place: the top performing school in Sefton for GCSE performance is St. Mary's College, Crosby.

EDIT 21/10/2025: Thank you for acting so promptly to update the story; it’s very much appreciated.
The culture tried and taken as a school is we work on commitment rather than focusing on target grades. As it is obvious that students open with nerves and a bit of excitement. This is basically statistical reports focused on the GCSE and vocational and technical qualification like cipd, HND and other etc.
