This Sunday will mark one of the biggest days in Formby Cricket Club’s history, as they face Northern Cricket Club of Crosby in the Lancashire Cup Final. The game takes place at Blackpool Cricket Club and is expected to draw a crowd of more than 1,000 spectators.
For Formby, this is the first ever Lancashire Cup final appearance, and excitement is building across the village. The club is calling on the whole Formby community to show their support for the team on this historic day.
Cockbain’s Winning Mentality
Formby’s captain, Ian Cockbain, knows exactly what it takes to succeed on the biggest stage. He won the Lancashire Cup four years in a row during his time with Bootle, and he now wants to pass that same ruthless mentality on to his young Formby teammates.
Cockbain said: “It was such an amazing team to be part of, and that just instilled that winning habit into me. It wasn’t seen as a big day out – if we didn’t win, it was a failure. We won pretty much everything in those days, and that’s the mindset I’m trying to instil here at Formby. It’s not just about Sunday, it’s about expecting to win and preparing properly. That mindset is what carries you forward into the professional game.”
With several young players pushing towards the professional ranks, Cockbain believes that developing this winning instinct is key to both the club’s future success and the players’ individual careers.
Focused on Silverware
After a narrow semi-final defeat in the ECHO Cup earlier in the week, Cockbain says the mood in the Formby camp remains positive ahead of Sunday.
“From the club’s point of view, it’ll be awesome to get over the line and bring home major silverware. It’s probably the biggest game in the club’s history. Everyone’s really excited but not getting overly worked up, which is quite nice. With the number of spectators expected, it should be a fantastic atmosphere.”
Formby will be boosted by the availability of promising batter Lucas Kennedy, while Ollie Sutton may also feature despite carrying a shoulder injury. Cockbain himself has been in fine form this season, sitting just five runs short of 2,000 in all competitions, and has already scored two centuries against Northern this year.
A Local Derby on the Big Stage
The all-Comp final is only the second of its kind in the Lancashire Cup’s history, underlining the strength of the competition, which has dominated the tournament for the past three decades.
“The Comp is one of the strongest leagues not just in Lancashire, but across the country,” Cockbain explained. “We know Northern’s strengths and weaknesses, and they know ours. It’ll be a game of cat and mouse, and whoever plays to their strengths best on the day will come out on top.”
A Day for Formby
For players, staff, and supporters, Sunday promises to be a day to remember. Whether you’re travelling to Blackpool or cheering from home, Formby Bubble joins the club in urging the community to get behind our local team as they chase a piece of history.
