We are raising urgent public awareness following a serious incident on National Trust Formby land, where a local lady suffered a broken arm in two places after tripping on Wicks Lake Bridge on Wednesday 18th June at around 12:45pm.
This well-used wooden bridge, located near Wicks Lake, has become a growing concern for many local residents due to the large gaps between the wooden slats and the uneven surface, both of which are believed to have contributed to the fall.

The woman fell heavily and required hospital treatment for her injuries. Her family is now calling on the National Trust to carry out urgent repairs and a full safety assessment to prevent future accidents.
When attending the site to take photos, the family spoke with two nearby residents who stated they had already raised these safety concerns with the National Trust. They claim that the maintenance carried out around six months ago not only failed to fix the issue but made the bridge even more hazardous.
While there is a small sign at either side of the bridge that reads “Caution Uneven Surface”, it is not clearly visible and certainly should not be used as a substitute for proper safety measures or maintenance.
We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the kind passers-by who helped at the scene. One man stayed with the injured woman, others helped her up, and another person went above and beyond to retrieve her keys, which had fallen through the wooden slats into the lake.
Her family is now asking for any witnesses who were present at the time of the fall to please come forward. They hope to present a full account of what happened in their appeal to the National Trust.
If you were there or witnessed the incident, please contact Formby Bubble and we will pass your details on confidentially.
Let’s work together to ensure National Trust Formby takes swift action to improve safety and protect the many visitors and residents who use this path every day.
