Formby Junior Sports Club - Franks report - 05/05/19

It had to be written in the stars that Formby Junior Sports Club would have a team in the Craven Minor League’s Jim Rourke Cup Final in Formby Junior Sports Club’s 60 th Year.

FJSC Under 9 Blacks had reached the final by winning earlier rounds against Greenloons FC Whites and S. and B. United. The Blacks opponents were Town Green, a team that had scored twenty-five goals on the way to the final. Another statistic was that FJSC Blacks had not won in previous encounters against Town Green this season.

It was safe to say that FJSC Under 9 Blacks were the underdogs going into the match but the way the young boys from Formby started the match, the formbook immediately went out of the window.

Town Green scored first but FJSC soon settled into the match with every FJSC player in the squad on the top of his form. The team’s determination throughout the match was exceptional and with time to the final whistle becoming less and less FJSC’s Dominic Maxwell equalised. All the team and the FJSC spectators were ecstatic. The whistle for full time was soon blown and the match went into extra time.

FJSC Blacks continued to play with great confidence and in the first period of extra time Archie Ogden scored to give FJSC a 2-1 lead. Town Green came back strongly in the second half but the FJSC team to a man found extra stamina from somewhere and withstood the pressure from Town Green to hold on to the end of this pulsating match. The two teams were exhausted and every player of both clubs deserves a huge amount of praise for putting on such a first class and memorable cup final. FJSC’s founder Jim Rourke, whom the Craven Minor League had named the trophy after his passing in 2006, would have been immensely proud of this never-say-die team.

Congratulations to all the FJSC boys who were quite rightly voted joint players of the match by their excellent manager and coach Gary Garvey.
