Formby Squirrels Rotary Club celebrated the first anniversary of their Charter award

Formby Squirrels Rotary Club celebrated the first anniversary of their Charter award with Rotarians from other Rotary clubs and friends at Don Luigi’s restaurant on Thursday 23rd March.

The meal was attended by 61 people in a relaxed atmosphere and a good time was had by all. President Dave Bosworth welcomed District Governor Rotarian Molly Youd and by agreement speeches were few and the evening was focused on socialising and making new friends.

The club has grown from just four people to number 23 current members over three years. Over the time of its existence to the end of this financial year the club has given over £10,000 to local charities such as Sefton Carers, Sefton Cancer Carers, Freshfield Animal rescue and the Formby Dementia Cafe to name a few. The club prefers to focus the majority of its support on local charities and good causes, but this does not mean that it does not consider other causes. It collected enough money for two shelter boxes for the Nepal Earthquake appeal, and gave money to the Cumbria Flood relief and Italian Earthquake appeal as well as supporting the International Rotary cause of eliminating polio.

This year the club is supporting Sefton Carers who support the carers of the chronically ill, Liverpool Teenage Cancer Trust to refit a respite room for the teenage patients undergoing treatment, the Southport Lifeboat which covers the Merseyside coast and the respite pods at the Altcar Army Camp.

The club will be holding a wine tasting on 30 June at the CVS in Formby to raise additional funds for the Southport Lifeboat.

The club differs from many Rotary clubs in that it is flexible in how it operates, happy to embrace innovation and is truly mixed in its membership. In fact unusually it has a predominance of female members, meets twice a month and does not routinely have meals as an integral part of the meeting, preferring to meet in the Grapes at Freshfield, for further information please contact rotaryformbysquirrels@gmail.com
