SCOUTING RETURNS TO HIGHTOWN – COULD YOU HELP?

SCOUTING RETURNS TO HIGHTOWN – COULD YOU HELP?

After over 20 years, Scouting is returning to Hightown in January 2017. Over the past few months a team from Crosby Scouts has been working hard with the parish of St Stephen’s to set up a Beaver Colony for boys & girls aged 6-8 years old. Being in Beavers introduces your child to the exciting adventure that is Scouting!

The Colony will be running a number of fun and exciting taster sessions in January and we want as many young people aged 6-8 to come along and try it out.

Scouting changes lives and helps young people create a better world for everyone to live in, but we can’t do this without adult volunteers. Rob Gorst District Development Manager said “there are many very rewarding roles which can be fitted around work and home life for the adult volunteers.”

Uniformed Leaders: These are often the most fun roles, and although groups meet each week, leaders can make a flexible commitment to helping to run the programme according to time they have available. Even a couple of hours a month at a time to suit you, can make a difference.

Rob also said “Many people forget that Scouting also relies on people with management skills. There are many other roles such as administrators, record keeping, looking after finances, and even helping to maintain headquarters”.

Volunteers can gain a lot from Scouting and many employers value the skills that volunteers develop.

Scouting is run entirely by volunteers, and takes place in several local groups in the Crosby Area

(Crosby, Waterloo, Seaforth, Thornton and Netherton).

If would like to find out more about volunteering or registering your child for the taster days then contact us:

ABOUT SCOUTING

• The Scout Association was founded on 1st August 1907.

• Adventure is at the core of Scouting, and the Association passionately believes in helping their members fulfil their full physical, intellectual social and spiritual potentials by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves. Over 200 activities are offered to the half a million Scouts around the UK, made possible by the efforts of 100,000 voluntary adult leaders. This has helped make Scouting the largest co-educational youth Movement in the country.

• One of the challenges that the Scout Movement faces is finding more volunteers to plug the current gap. At present there are nearly 38,000 young people on waiting lists as more and more young people want to experience the adventure of Scouting.

• Adults working in Scouting contribute in excess of 364 million hours of voluntary work each year to their local communities.

• The number of volunteers working for Scouting is bigger than the combined workforces of the BBC (24,000) and McDonalds (67,000) put together.

• Worldwide Scouting has 30 million members both male and female and operates in nearly every country in the world.

• There are half a million members across the UK (400,000 young people supported by 100,000 adult volunteers). Worldwide Scouting has 28 million members both male and female and operates in nearly every country in the world.

• There are 200 Scout activity and challenge badges. These require participants to achieve a level of understanding and skill determined to be realistic for their age group.

• There are over 400 young people in Crosby support by over 80 volunteers.

• Activities undertaken in the last year include: Archery, camping, crafts, hiking, canoeing, outdoor cooking, climbing, and mountain biking to name but a few.

• Activities planned for the next 18 months include: Members from the Explorers (14 -18 year olds) are planning on attending a World Scout camp in Iceland.
