Claire Simmo opens 7th Beer Festival at The Freshfield

Radio City presenter and Southport Theatre panto star declares new outside area open as event continues this weekend.

Radio City presenter Claire Simmo officially opened the 7th Beer Festival for The Freshfield pub on Massams Lane in Formby on Wednesday.

Recently named runner-up as one of Britain’s best pubs , The Freshfield celebrated the 100-strong real ale festival with a newly revamped outside area.

The festival gives regulars and visitors alike a chance to try one of the 100 beers on offer at their new festival bar, with live music, entertainment and beer tapas continuing today (Friday), Saturday and Sunday.

Since 2012, The Freshfield has won nine awards and has worked with over 150 breweries, held numerous charity events including beer and food pairing evenings, Meet the Brewer nights.

At the grand opening of the festival, local photographer Jono Symonds Photography was on hand to capture all the action as Claire Simmo declared the event open.

Claire Simmo, who will be starring with Heartbeat actor David Lonsdale in the Aladdin panto at Southport Theatre this December, said: “I got involved because I know one of the guys who works there and I did it last year for them. I said I’m only coming back if they let me pull a pint!

“It was a great event all the regulars were there. It was such a nice evening we managed to do it all outside in the new area.

“We have been going ‘The Freshie’ for years to be perfectly honest, we go out on a bike ride with the kids and pass by.

“Everything was going well on the night until I made a cock-up on my second pint!”
