Merseysiders among thousands to sign petition for North of England to join Scotland

Petition grows following Conservative win in last week’s general election.

Merseysiders are among more than 6,000 people backing a petition calling for the north of England to “join Scotland”.

The petition, on Change.org, was created during the Scottish independence campaign last year, but has seen a rise in signatures following the Conservative Party’s win in last week’sgeneral election.

At the time of writing, more than 6,400 people had signed the petition.

The border between a ‘new Scotland’ and England would see cities including Liverpool, Manchester, Preston, Hull, Leeds and Sheffield joining the newly-created country.

The petition – ‘Allow the north of England to secede from the UK and join Scotland’ - states: “The deliberations in Westminster are becoming increasingly irrelevant to the north of England. The northern cities feel far greater affinity with their Scottish counterparts such as Glasgow and Edinburgh than with the ideologies of the London-centric south.

“The needs and challenges of the north cannot be understood by the endless parade of old Etonions lining the front benches of the House of Commons. The north of England should join the newly independent Scotland and regain control over its own destiny.

“We, the people of the north, demand that in the event that Scotland becomes independent the border between England and the New Scotland be drawn along a line that runs between the River Dee and the mouth of The Humber.”

In the petition, Michael Anchor, from Liverpool, writes: “Fed up with the south looking down at the north.”

Alan Henry, who is also from the city, posted: “Hate being forgot about by the south we deserve a say as well.”

‘Quo Iddon’, from Ormskirk, said: “As an ex-serviceman i find it disgusting that the Tories do not have a clue what is going on in their own country.”

Elaine McMonagle, from Glasgow, added: “We would love our northern English friends to become our southern Scottish friends.”

Despite being closed, the petition has been gathering signatures since last Thursday’s vote, thanks to the #TakeUsWithYouScotland hashtag on Twitter.

Would you vote for Merseyside to leave England to join Scotland?
