An earthquake has struck the UK and hundreds of people across Formby felt the tremors

Thousands of people have reported feeling an earthquake this afternoon which was also felt in Formby and other parts of the UK. People in locations ranging from Liverpool to Cornwall have reported feeling the strong tremor.

The US Geological Survey & British Geological Survey confirmed an earthquake of 4.4 magnitude was recorded at 2.31pm. The epicentre was northeast of Clydach, Wales. Swansea University was quickly evacuated as a result of the incident. So far there have been no reports of major damage or injuries.

Roger Musson, from the BGS, said: "Events of this magnitude happen in the UK every three to five years, it was the largest earthquake in Britain for the last 10 years."

He said: "It was "relatively shallow" for a larger British earthquake; they are usually around 15-20km deep. In relation to this afternoons event, there are around 3000 events of this size in the world every year. Biggest onshore UK event in 10 years, since 27 Feb 2008. Events as large as this only happen every 3 – 5 years in the UK."

Dyfed Powys Police force said it had received "an extremely high volume" of calls relating to tremors. Meanwhile, South Wales Police urged the public to avoid calling the emergency services unless it was to report damage or injuries.

Steven Clathworthy, who lives near Bridgend, south Wales, said he heard a bang and the settee moved.

"All the neighbours were out asking 'what's happening?'" he said.

Bryan Jones, 72, of Treorchy, Rhondda Cynon Taff, said: "It was like a tremor but it was quite frightening for my granddaughter - she swore a little bit and my wife got up asking 'What was that?

Speaking to the Formby Bubble, Rona said: "I'm glad someone else felt it, I didn't like to say - as it was so far away. It reminded of the one in the 80's only not quite as strong. I was sitting down for both of them."

Julie from Formby said: "It was a big shake or maybe two and my dogs were going mad. It was actually really scary."

Hannon from Formby said: "I Was sat down after my run and the TV and photo frames were rattling. I thought it was a heavy truck or something."
