DIY giant Homebase has recalled bamboo blinds over concerns children could be strangled by the cord.

The retailer, which has stores in Formby , Southport , Warrington and Wirral , said the pull cords on its Bamboo Roll Up Blinds are too strongly locked, which “could pose a risk of strangulation”.

Young children do not have the strength to break the cord’s safety device if they became caught in it, the company said.

A spokesman said there have been no reported incidents with the blinds and added that the recall is a “precautionary measure”.

They said customers who may be affected are those who bought the blinds from June 2014 and urged anyone who did buy the blinds to take them down instantly.

A statement on the Homebase website said: “If you have purchased one of these items after June 1 2014, please stop using it immediately, please call for a free replacement breakaway device and instructions.

“Alternatively please return it to your nearest Homebase store for a full refund. No proof of purchase is necessary.”

Speaking to the Mirror, a spokesman said: “The safety of products sold through Homebase is of paramount importance to us and we are working closely with Trading Standards.”
