Formby were robbed of a win says Ian Cockbain

Formby Cricket Club captain proud of team but disappointed with result

Unfortunately a rain hit day took the game away from Formby this weekend as their game against Wallasey ended in a no decision mid-way into the game.

Formby had won the toss and elected to bat, a decision many agreed with as they would then go on to record a score of 221 for seven wickets of 48.4 overs.

The away side declared with the clouds looming and allowed the home side the chance to bat, hoping for success with the ball to lead the side to victory.

However, rain would play its part, ensuring there would be no final result and that the two sides would walk away with the game ending in a no decision.

Captain Ian Cockbain, was proud of the way his lower order batted and believed the score they recorded was a winning score on the day and believes the weather ruined his side’s chance for victory on the day.

He said: “As the score suggest we batted very well, we got 221 from 49 overs, but we struggled again at the top end of the order, some of the guys got out cheaply, but this week we managed to dig in and progress and Jack Vale especially did very well.”

“Stephen Parry did very well and of course Gary Keedy at the end, when the pressure was off got 31 not out and then I felt 221 was a magnificent score on that wicket, I felt 180 was a winning score on the day so scoring 221 was a real bonus.”

“And then what happens, the weather ruins our day and it was very disappointing, I felt we were in prime position to win the game.”

I felt really confident that we would get an opportunity to win the game, we declared early and we predicted about 60 overs to bowl them out with and the wicket was seaming around and we felt it was all day.”

Next up in the fixture list next weekend for Formby is a home game against Northern CC, a side that they earlier drew against in the first game of the season back in April.

Cockbain is hoping his side can bounce back with victory this weekend as it is now six games without a win in all competitions.

“They’re a very good team and we need to play well, we need to get back on the winning trail because we haven’t won for four weeks, a couple of poor batting performances apart from this week so we need to perform well, but I think it will be an evenly matched game.”
