Lucky escape for animals at the Rescue Centre

ANIMALS recovering at a rescue centre in Ince Blundell, had a lucky escape after a car smashed through the fencing and into the shelter. Staff at Freshfield Animal Rescue centre were left stunned after they returned to the shelter to discover a car had crashed through the fencing and into the entrance of the rescue centre on East Lane. Following the incident, which happened on Wednesday July 1, staff and volunteers were left with a mammoth task of clearing up the debris in time for their open day event on Sunday July 5. It is believed the car had skidded as it turned the corner and smashed into the rescue centre. Staff are now asking for improved safety measures along the road to prevent further accidents happening in the future. Freshfield Animal Rescue Centre manager Helen Stanbury said: “Thank goodness no one was coming through that door when it happened because they could have been seriously injured or killed. ”We feel that there could be measures taken to minimise risk of this kind of thing happening again; at present the national speed limit applies on this road; it is a sharp bend and speed bumps would help a lot. “The driver of the car was very apologetic and claims to have skidded on something as he came around the corner. ”We are just very grateful it wasn't half an hour earlier as there may well have been staff and animals coming out of the door, that is now lying in the yard. “It couldn't have happened at a worse time, with our open day on Sunday July 5. ”Luckily, we still managed to go ahead with the open day and made the most of what we could. “We have reported it to the police but they said they are not taking any further action and we are hoping our insurers will be cover the damage caused. ”We have erected temporary fencing in the meantime and all the animals are all safe and well because they are housed at the back of the shelter.“
