Formby Swimming Club celebrate anniversary with win in Merseyside and District Swimming League.

An historic event - the first ever ASA registered Gala held at Formby Pool, occurred on Sunday. Formby Swimming Club, which has only been in existence 18 months, hosted their leg of the Merseyside and District Swimming League, Division Three at the pool on Sunday evening and had more to celebrate as they ran out worthy winners.

The home side finished 12 points ahead of Runcorn Reps with Warrington in third and Bridgefield fourth. With one round to go, Formby head the table 37 points clear of Runcorn. Many records tumbled at the North West Masters Distance Championships held at Wigan on Sunday. In the very first event of the day Chris Rix of Warrington Dolphins set a new record in the 1500m freestyle knocking more than four seconds off the previous best.

In the 800m freestyle Southport’s Doreen Gordon established a new Championship record that she herself had held since 2012. It was a good day all round for the Warrington Dolphins as the evergreen Graham Padgett took gold in the 400m Individual Medley and 800m freestyle, whilst in the 400m freestyle they had a one-two with Paul Frith taking gold and Russell Mason silver. In the British University and College Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, City of Liverpool’s Daniel Hussey (LJMU) achieved a Personal Best in the 50m butterfly, whilst another City of Liverpool swimmer, Lucy Doherty (Sheffield Hallam) produced seasons bests in the 50m and 100m backstroke.

This weekend is the first part of the Lancashire Age Group Championships at Liverpool Aquatic Centre when our local swimmers will compete with the best of the county.
