Broadchurch series two set for January broadcast on ITV

Murder mystery written by Formby's Chris Chibnall will star David Tennant and Olivia Colman again.

The second series of hit detective drama Broadchurch will be broadcast in January 2015.

Written by Formby's Chris Chibnall, the show will once again star David Tennant and Olivia Colman with series two being announced by a series of trailers on YouTube.

Series one drew almost 10 million viewers for its final episode as the nation flocked to the story of murder in a small seaside town.

Chris Chibnall said he was taken aback by the response.

"It was completely unexpected, and it’s funny, people now ask ‘did you know?’. You never know about anything," he said.

"To be honest, we all hoped that we’d still be on air in week three. Because it’s one of those things, if nobody had come to watch episode one, they wouldn’t have understood what was going on in episode two and we’d have been dead on our feet.

"So I just felt incredibly lucky, and there was a certain point around episode three or four where it started to go a bit crazy and people started to talk about it and it just became this whole other thing."

He added he wrote the show for himself, without a commission.

"When we made it we were proud of it and felt we’d done as good a job as we could, but you never know what the audience is going to come to and so to watch that happen. And I know, speaking to David Tennant and Olivia Coleman, all of us were in the same position of watching going ‘what’s happening here?!’

"The public are in charge, people tell you. So it was just exciting that people cared about a story that we’d all put together. More than anything, it was humbling, and remains so to be honest."

The show has also spawned a US spin off called Gracepoint.
