Discover the ghosts that lurk in Liverpool's most haunted churchyards

Some 20 ghosts and a vampire are rumoured to haunt St James's Cemetery

Have you seen a ghost? Tell us about it and we will put it in our blog...info@formbybubble.com

Have you got any spooky stories about a graveyard in Formby? We want to hear it.

Ahead of Halloween we reveal which Merseyside cemeteries are full of lingering ghosts

The supernatural statistics say you are more likely to encounter a ghost in your own home or in the city centre than in the graveyard.

But there are still a lot of haunted churchyards on Merseyside. Here's where you might bump into some spooks and spirits this Halloween:

St James's Cemetery

I’ve got to start our ghoulish graveyard at St James’s Cemetery, a sunken dormitory of the dead in a former quarry where around 54,000 Victorian and early 20th century souls rest – well some of them do, anyway, because some 20 ghosts - and even an alleged vampire - haunt this gothic valley of death.

William Huskisson, the MP who has the grisly honour of being the first person to be run down (and killed) by a train in 1830, has been seen limping and loitering aroundhis grand mausoleum which dominates the cemetery.

A woman in black who dates from the Victorian or Edwardian era was seen gliding along a path here only a week ago – towards a tomb that was ransacked by grave-robbers in the 1970s.

Fir Lane cemetery

Adjoining Holy Trinity Church, Wavertree, this cemetery has a weird caped man in black with gauntlets and no face who darts out from the gravestones and holds up traffic. And the crawling misty apparition of another ghost here was allegedlycaptured on a sophisticated night-vision camera around 2004.

Flaybrick Hill Cemetery

Visitors to this Birkenhead cemetery, have often heard a growling noise, odd mutterings and heavy footsteps behind them when they walk through this cemetery during the hours of twilight, and some have even seen what looks like a tall, hairy hunched werewolf-like figure.

In Victorian times, there was a gravestone with the curious inscription: ‘Here lies one who was half man, half beast’. The stone seems to have been removed by someone in the 1960s, but what was it referring to?

Toxteth Park Cemetery

This one is haunted by the red-haired barefooted White Lady, who is hell-bent on causing crashes by flitting out onto Smithdown Road to cause many accidents over the years.

The cemetery was also said to be the resting place of a Haitian zombie, buried in the 1930s in an unmarked grave (on the Hartington Road side of the cemetery) with a stitched-up mouth full of salt.

Everton Cemetery

Witches figure heavily at Halloween, and you may find the most evil one who is said to frequent this cemetery, on Long Lane.

Described as a black-robed ‘crooked hag’, she has been seen since the 1930s with shadow-looking children who she seems to boss around in the cemetery.
