Formby Junior Sports Club - Frank's report - 12th March

Formby Junior Sports Club Under 17 Girls’ recorded one of their best ever results by winning two nil against Preston North End in the West Lancs Under 18 Premier Division.

In their eighth season of playing football, which started in the Inter Club Section, this group of girls has from raw beginners, through the ranks of Inter Club and with expert coaching along the way has developed into a very good Representative team. It has been achieved, “ The Formby Junior Sports Club way. “ This team is now more than capable of competing with the best in the area.

This formula was developed with the boys when Inter Club started 60 years ago in 1959 and then linked with Boys’ Representative Team football from 1973 (forty-six years ago) and more recently Girls’ football, which was started twenty years ago in 1999.

Girls’ football over the twenty years has had many ups and downs but now sees for the first time the possibility of playing football from Reception up to hopefully next season Under 18’s. All the girls in the club are without doubt in the best club for girls’ football in the area although they may not realise it. Sometimes this may be forgotten.

This has been achieved due to a tremendous effort by FJSC, and provided the girls and their parents recognise what has been accomplished, standards will continue to go up and up and one day maybe we will have some of our girls playing in the Women’s Super League and not impossibly becoming an England Lioness.

It happened with Michael Ball who started his football in the Boys’ Inter Club Section and went on to play for Everton, Rangers and England. Therefore why can’t this happen with the girls too? It is not an impossible dream and it can happen as a result of starting the early years of football at Formby Junior Sports Club.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM MATCHES The match of the day was the encounter in the first league fixture in the Under 18 Premier Division between FJSC Girls and Preston North End. Formby started well with a strong wind behind them and had the better of the first half with Sophie Dixon scoring to give FJSC the lead. Lily Hamilton caused Preston a lot of problems and was unlucky not to add to the slender lead before half time. FJSC soaked up the pressure in the second half as Preston now with the wind as an advantage went on to the attack.

FJSC effectively counter attacked and from a break, Jayde Hanlon’s astute through ball provided Ana Waite with a chance on goal. Anna made no mistake and scored to double FJSC’s lead. Preston rallied but FJSC’s goalkeeper Charlotte Armstrong dealt very confidently with all attempts on goal. The 2 nil win shows FJSC Under 17’s as top of the Under 18 league – a great sight for all the girls in FJSC to see what is possible.

In the Liverpool League FJSC Under 16 Girls although losing 2-1 to Eagle Sports from Warrington played possibly their best football of the season so far. Midway through the first half a well-taken free kick by Rachel Robinson set up Josie McIver to score her third goal in two games. Eagle Sports drew level immediately after half time and then went on to win with a very fortunate late goal in the game. Throughout the match the Under 16’s came very close to scoring through efforts from girl of the match Aimee Hollis and Liberty Murphy. With regular keeper Rachel Robinson unfit to play in goal three girls deputised during the match - namely Dot Russell-Gajos, Aimee Hollis and Anna Johnson. All three volunteers made some great saves. Outfield players Ana Waite, Abby Hobbs and Annabel Gowling also played well in this very close match. FJSC Under 12 Blacks conceded three goals early on in their match with Redgate Yellows. After an even spell three more goals gave Redgate a 6 nil victory. Man of the match was Oliver Charnock.

The FJSC Under 10 Blacks fixture with Southport FC was a credit to the two teams. The highlight of the match was a superb goal scored by Harry Lofthouse after some clever inter passing.

FJSC Under 9’s played Town Green. James Cook scored and joint players of the match were Will Brown and Franky Moon.

FJSC Under 7’s were in action against a strong Burscough Dynamo team. Like all the FJSC teams playing on Sunday the boys played well in extremely challenging weather conditions. Beau Weston was amongst the scorers.
