Why is Boxing Day called Boxing Day?

The first thing to say about Boxing Day is that its origins have nothing to do with boxing, or with putting used wrapping paper into boxes, or with boxing up all your unwanted presents, or indeed with football, horse racing, hunting, shopping, going for icy mass swims in the sea, or any of the other activities that now characterise the day after Christmas and act as an antidote to the languor that descends on households at around teatime on Christmas Day. The origins of Boxin

A Yule Log and Plum Pudding in the Round Tower - Formby Lighthouse

We all love the traditions and tales of Christmas Past, whatever our age. Just consider the enduring popularity of Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ well into the 21st century: our ways of celebrating at this time has certainly changed and developed over the years, but for so many reasons this remains a special time for family, friends and community. Personally, I look forward to enjoying the traditions and having the time to reflect on past and present, and enjoy particul

A seasoned store security guard, he locked on to her as soon as she walked in. Well you don't want her sort in a respectable store, do you. Lowers the tone and up to no good, he was sure. He'd seen any number of 'em, sly thieving lot. He let her get half way down the first aisle, then padded surprisingly lightly after her. The store was busy and the child small and skinny; he'd have to watch she didn't give him the slip. There she went, down the next aisle. Sure enough, out o

Formby Christmas Tree was originally in Duke Street Park

Looking through the Formby Civic Society archives we were able to find this photograph that appeared in the Formby Times showing a Mrs. Thompson and her daughter Nicola looking at the Christmas Tree on Chapel Lane in 1974. This in turn reminded me of the part played by FCS in helping to introduce a Tree to Chapel Lane. It was in 1954, just after the founding of what was then called The Formby Society, that the custom of raising a tree with lighting for Christmas was begun. I

Twas the Night before Christmas by Denise Jones

Twas the night before Christmas, upstairs in the house Warmly snuggled in bed was my snoring spouse He’d had a few scoops, so a bit worse for wear Leaving me to hang stockings by the fireside with care Every year brings on panic; I rush to invest In mountains of food, drink, and all the rest But on Christmas Eve, nagging doubts set in So, I sit here drinking a large glass of gin For when present buying, I get in a bind I hesitate and falter and change my mind Presents don’t a

'No Room At The Inn' - Persistence pays off when you are looking for a new loan, credit card

When Joseph and Mary were looking for somewhere to stay and everyone they approached said ‘sorry there is no room at the Inn’, their persistence eventually paid off, even if it wasn’t perfect it was an offer of somewhere to stay. These days for many people, the term ‘sorry there is no room at the Inn’ is a more likely to be ‘sorry computer says no’ when you are looking for a new loan, credit card or mortgage. What many people don’t understand is each lender has their own crit
