The Queens Cinema in Formby, originally named 'The Picturedrome' in 1912

This drawing by Muriel Sibley conveys something of the sleepy atmosphere of a suburban cinema in the late 1950’s. This is the Queen’s, Formby, shortly before closure. The Queens Cinema was originally named ‘The Picturedrome’ and was opened in 1912 in Three Tuns Lane on the site of the present YMCA charity shop and Village Inn. Throughout it’s life, The Queens was one of Formby’s most popular venues, with films being changed twice a week, two ‘houses’ every evening and matinee

What and who is Formby Civic Society?

You may well have heard of the Formby Civic Society yet not know what it does or who it is for. It is for anyone living in or connected to Formby as a way of safeguarding our heritage and playing a part in giving Formby people a say over proposed changes that may have a negative impact on our community. Change and movement forward is clearly important, but not every proposal is in the best interests of our town and it should be the right change for the right reasons. The ‘F

Don't Forget to put Your Clocks Forward at 1am

Don't forget to put your clocks forward at 1am. Some people change the clock before they go to bed so they don't forget. In the UK the clocks go forward 1 hour at 1am on the last Sunday in March (Sunday 26th March), and back 1 hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October (Sunday 29th October 2017). The period when the clocks are 1 hour ahead is called British Summer Time (BST). There's more daylight in the evenings and less in the mornings (sometimes called Daylight Saving Time)

Dog walkers urged to be vigilant after poisonous fatbergs wash up on a beach

Dog owners are being asked to be vigilant after the discovery of Palm Oil fatbergs have appeared on New Brighton beach which is only 6 miles from Formby beach. The fatbergs are poisonous to dogs. These are high concentrations of an oily fat that can be toxic if eaten by a dog. They can vary in size from the size of a golf ball to a boulder. It’s not known precisely where they came from but it’s thought that a Palm Oil consignment may have fallen off a ship. There was a spilla

Government needs to put safety first at Switch Island, says local MP

Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson has again called for urgent changes to Switch Island after a “catalogue of serious accidents “at the busy motorway junction.
