Helicopter training exercises over Formby
You may have noticed the low flying helicopters over the last couple of days flying over Hightown and Formby from the Altcar training camp. They are in fact Royal Navy helicopters involved in search and rescue exercises. What is Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday?
Shrove Tuesday is the day that precedes Ash Wednesday. As it is determined by Easter, for which the actual date changes on an annual basis. This year Pancake Day takes place on Tuesday 28th February. The name Shrove Tuesday comes from 'shrive', meaning absolution for sins by doing penance. The day gets its name from the tradition of Christians trying to be 'shriven' before Lent. Christians would go to Confession, where they admit their sins to a priest and ask for absolution.

Two men have been charged following a burglary in Formby
Merseyside Police can confirm two men have been charged with burglary, theft, theft shop and common assault following an incident on Thursday, 23 February.
Alan Rimmer, 57 years of Kipling Street, Bootle and David Keating, 41 years of Cookson Road, Seaforth appeared at South Sefton Magistrates court on 24th February. Keating was remanded in custody and Rimmer bailed with conditions, to appear at South Sefton Magistrates Court on 14 April 2017.

Formby Rotary Group learn about becoming Dementia Friends
There is currently a campaign to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding around dementia has been brought to Formby. The members of the Formby Squirrels rotary group were recently treated to an informative talk by Elizabeth Foggin. Elizabeth is a solicitor from Autumn Years Law and she has previously spoken about launching a ‘Dementia Friends’ initiative in the area. The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is a way to change people’s perceptions of dementia.

Baby Red Squirrel found on forest floor is recovering with Wildlife Trust
A tiny red squirrel is recovering with Wildlife Trust officers after a traumatic start to its life. It has now been confirmed that it was a 42-year-old man that has sadly died after he was struck by a train at Fisherman’s Path crossing in Formby. Coroners’ court recorded a verdict of accidental death for Andrew Coogan in the Shorrocks Hill fire
A fire at a the stables in which a 45-year-old man died was caused by an electical fault it was heard at Sefton Coroners’ court. The court heard that emergency workers were called to the stables block at Shorrocks Hill in Formby on August 25th last year. Andrew Coogan’s body was found at the scene and later formally identified. He had worked at the stables for some time.
