Shrove Tuesday is the day that precedes Ash Wednesday. As it is determined by Easter, for which the actual date changes on an annual basis. This year Pancake Day takes place on Tuesday 28th February. The name Shrove Tuesday comes from 'shrive', meaning absolution for sins by doing penance. The day gets its name from the tradition of Christians trying to be 'shriven' before Lent. There is currently a campaign to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding around dementia has been brought to Formby. The members of the Formby Squirrels rotary group were recently treated to an informative talk by Elizabeth Foggin. Elizabeth is a solicitor from Autumn Years Law and she has previously spoken about launching a ‘Dementia Friends’ initiative in the area. The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is a way to change people’s perceptions of dementia.

Coroners’ court recorded a verdict of accidental death for Andrew Coogan in the Shorrocks Hill fire

A fire at a the stables in which a 45-year-old man died was caused by an electical fault it was heard at Sefton Coroners’ court. The court heard that emergency workers were called to the stables block at Shorrocks Hill in Formby on August 25th last year. Andrew Coogan’s body was found at the scene and later formally identified. He had worked at the stables for some time.
